"WALANG PAGKALUPIG" (1962): WISH LIST# 39

Another of my top wish list is this 1962 action movie, "Walang Pagkalupig," which tells of the heroic exploits of PC Ranger Captain Laudemer Kahulugan (played by Fernando Poe, Jr.) tasked to hunt down Huk dissident leader Casto Alejandrino (Van de Leon). The movie, which was serialized over radio DZBB, also stars Joseph Estrada, Yolanda Guevarra, Helen Gamboa, Rodolfo Cristobal, Bert Silva and Paquito Diaz, under Pablo Santiago direction

"BICOL EXPRESS" (1957): WISH LIST # 38

The young Fernando Poe, Jr. pitted talents with veteran actors and actresses in the 1957 movie, “Bicol Express.” He essayed the role of a psychopathic killer in one of the seven stories featured in the film. This was one of the rare movie appearances of FPJ where he played a villain in a movie. Also that year, he did “Kamay ni Cain” where he also played villain to lead star Zaldy Zshornack.

FPJ COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS LAUNCHED

MANILA, Philippines/ November 10, 2010 – Veteran actress Susan Roces, known as the First lady of Philippine cinema, led the launching of the first commemorative stamps honoring her late husband, National Artist for Film Fernando Poe Jr (FPJ), on Wednesday.

"This means a lot to our family," Roces said at the 267th anniversary of the Philippine Postal Office that showcased a philatelic exhibit honoring National Artists Levi Celerio, Leonor Orosa-Goquingco, Carlos Quirino and Nick Joaquin.

Along with her daughter, Movie and Television Review and Classification Board chairman Grace Poe-Llamanzares, Roces proudly showed the stamp images of FPJ in his iconic roles as Panday, Totoy Bato and Pepeng Kaliwete. Also included is his movie “Umpisahan Mo, Tatapusin Ko.”

The FPJ commemorative stamps, selling at P65, is also a big boost to the campaign to promote letter writing in the age of electronic media, cellphone technology and social media.

"Nothing can compare to the personal touch in writing letters, and the smell that goes with love letters," said Roces, who herself continues her family tradition of collecting stamps.

Also featured in the exhibit is a 1961 photo of Roces promoting philately.

She said stamps and letter writing should continue in this Internet-driven age.

Llamanzares, meantime, has encouraged her mother to sign up on Facebook and other social media sites to connect to a new generation of fans. She quickly added that she will not press it.

The Philpost event is a rare outing for Roces, who has largely shunned public events and political occasions and endorsements since FPJ died in December 2004, months after the controversial presidential elections.

FPJ ran in the 2004 presidential polls but lost to former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who is now a representative of the 2nd District of Pampanga.

"ANAK NG BULKAN" (1959): KOMIKS SERIAL AND MOVIE ADAPTATION

A monstrous giant bird soars high across Manila and suburbs in 1959 in Emmanuel Rojas’ epic-adventure movie “Anak ng Bulkan.” The film was based from a komiks serial by Jose Domingo Karasig, published in the Liwayway Magazine. It caught the attention of the moviegoers during its theatrical run because of its awesome display of visual and special effects unprecedented during that time. It’s truly amazing how the director was able to capture the needed effects with the limited resources at hand. The movie, set in a remote volcanic island, tells of the friendship between a little boy named Bentoy and a giant bird named Goliat.

Fernando Poe Jr. shared top billing with veteran actress, Edna Luna, but the main stars of the movie was the giant bird and the little boy played by 7-year old Ace York (or Ace Vergel). Veteran character actor Bruno Punzalan in the role of Mang Kanuto, the stepfather of Bentoy was unforgettable who made life miserable for the boy.
