Since the movie was about a struggling boxer, the production staff headed by Director Gerry de Leon opted to consult boxing champ Flash Elorde on some boxing tips and pointers and assist them in some critical boxing scenes to make the movie more realistic. Those pointers became very crucial later in many fight scenes the actor made in his movies. He integrated part of Elorde’s styles and techniques to his own styles and came up with a unique “FPJ rapid and lightning punches” we all know. They later starred and teamed up in a 1964 movie, Mano-Mano.

REMEMBERING FPJ ON HIS 10TH DEATH ANNIVERSARY

“DA KING:” Would he have led the nation into a verdant meadow with conviction, compassion and box-office success? Would he have tempered power with grace, giving more cause to idolize him? Now, it’s goodbye to all that. (Inquirer: Filipino of the Year 2004)

FERNANDO POE, JR., CHARITO SOLIS, BERNARD BONNIN, LOURDES MEDEL, MILA OCAMPO IN "SANDATA AT PANGAKO" (1961)

LVN Pictures, Inc.

Cast Fernando Poe, Jr., Charito Solis, Bernard Bonnin, Lourdes Medel, Mila Ocampo, Gil de Leon, Johnny Reyes, Marietta Sanz, Tony Dantes, Baby Janet

In the fifties and early sixties, Sampaguita, LVN and Premiere Productions were the three leading movie production outfits. The so-called studio system existed that time wherein these movie companies maintained their own stable of contract stars, directors, writers, technicians and crews. There were other small movie outfits, like Lebran, Royal, Everlasting, Magna-East, Larry Santiago, People’s Pictures, Tagalog-Ilang-Ilang, Tamaraw, among others.

Fernando Poe, Jr., a contract star of Premiere Productions, bolted out of his mother studio when his request for a talent fee increase was rejected. He was jobless for six months until a juicy offer (twice his old rate) from Magna-East Productions came. He made Markado (1960), a blockbuster that year. It was FPJ who broke the studio system and the standard talent rate of contract movie stars.

As a freelancer, he made Sandata at Pangako in 1961, the one and only movie he did with LVN Pictures. It was also the only movie he appeared and starred with 60s action star Bernard ‘Palos’ Bonnin.

An emotional and dramatic scene between two great stars of Philippine cinema, Fernando Poe, Jr. and Charito Solis. The movie, "Sandata at Pangako," was their first team-up and FPJ's only movie under LVN Pictures.

The komiks serial novel was eventually adapted into movies by Hollywood FarEast Production, the same outfit that made FPJ a box-office action star in Markado in 1960. FPJ played the role of Orlando, the knife wielder, Amado Cortez as Merlin Mendez, the fast drawing gunslinger and Eddie Rodriguez as bullwhip-lashing Roldan Mojica.
