TWO VERSIONS OF "ZAMBOANGA"

Another dream came true for FPJ when he did a remake in 1966, his own version of his dad's memorable 1937 movie, Zamboanga.

Left- Zamboanga (1937)- Stars Fernando Poe, Sr. and Rosa Del Rosario/ Directed by Eduardo de Castro/Re-screened in 2004

Zamboanga (1937) believed to be lost was finally found and was screened in 2004, courtesy of Nick Deocampo (
see link). "The movie depicts the life of south sea divers and was shot in the remote island of Jolo. In the movie, Poe Sr. played a pearl fisher (as Danao) who marries the village chief's daughter, Minda (played by Rosa del Rosario). Among the guests of their wedding is a pirate who abducts the bride, inciting a tribal war. Fil-American Eduardo de Castro directed the cast that spoke in the Tausog and English languages."

Zamboanga (1966) was the young Poe's own version, where he played the role of a sea trader who fell in love with a Muslim princess played by Susan Roces. They were forbidden by tradition to love one another.

SANDATA AT PANGAKO (1961)

In the fifties and early sixties, Sampaguita, LVN and Premiere Productions were the three leading movie production outfits. The so-called studio system existed that time wherein these movie companies maintained their own stable of contract stars, directors, writers, technicians and crews. There were other small movie outfits, like Lebran, Royal, Everlasting, Magna-East, Larry Santiago, People’s Pictures, Tagalog-Ilang-Ilang, Tamaraw, among others.
Fernando Poe, Jr., a contract star of Premiere Productions, bolted out of his mother studio when his request for a talent fee increase was rejected. He was jobless for six months until a juicy offer (twice his old rate) from Magna-East Productions came. He made Markado (1960), a blockbuster that year. It was FPJ who broke the studio system and the standard talent rate of contract movie stars.
As a freelancer, he made Sandata at Pangako in 1961, the one and only movie he did with LVN Pictures. It was also the only movie he appeared and starred with 60s action star Bernard ‘Palos’ Bonnin.

Sandata at Pangako will be shown at Cinema One on September 16, Tuesday at 3 pm.

NOW ON ORIGINAL VCD: LO' WAIST GANG AT SI OG SA MINDORO (1958)

"Lo' Waist Gang at si Og sa Mindoro," released in 1958, is now available on original VCD and can be purchased on selected Astroplus/Astrovision outlets. The movie, fourth or fifth in the highly successful Lo' Waist Gang series starred Fernando Poe, Jr., Jesus 'OG' Ramos (Mr. Philippines), Teresita Mendez, Chiquito, Berting Labra, Bobby Gonzales and the rest of the Lo' Waist Gang members.

Just watched the movie. Please be warned that the copy is not that good. The audio is bearable, but the picture is irritable to the eyes--- it's like watching a movie in betamax format- three generation copy. As I've said in the past, it's better than nothing.
