FPJ MONUMENT UNVEILED IN MANILA/ DECEMBER 14, 2012
MANILA, Philippines–The eighth death anniversary of the late actor Fernando Poe Jr. was marked Friday by the unveiling of a monument in his honor along Roxas Boulevard and a Mass that followed at his tomb at the Manila North Cemetery, where rivals for Manila mayor who have been taking swipes at each other–incumbent Alfredo Lim and deposed President Joseph Estrada–shook hands.
“My family is thankful to the City of Manila for concretizing the recognition to my father in such a big way,” Poe’s daughter, former MTRCB chair and senatorial candidate Grace Poe-Llamanzares, said at the unveiling and wreath-laying ceremony along Roxas Boulevard across the US Embassy.
She said “although we don’t know when justice will be served,” the monument was “a symbol of hope that the truth will eventually come out.”
FPJ’s family and supporters maintain that he was cheated of the presidency when he ran in 2004 and lost to Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Grace said the 9-foot bronze statue was a reflection of her father, in real life, “matikas at matatag.”
The statue shows Poe, known as the action king of Philippine cinema, wearing a barong Tagalog and waving his right hand. Inscribed at the bottom are the words, “Tunay na Pangulo sa puso ng nakararaming Pilipino.”
“I wanted to capture a simple moment during his campaign for presidency,” said sculptor Jonas Roces, not related to Poe’s widow, actress Susan Roces.
Susan Roces also expressed her gratitude, saying it was only fitting to put up a monument to Poe in Manila because he grew up in the city.
“I got teary eyed when the monument was unveiled … People might be wondering why this was put up here. As a child, Ronnie (referring to Poe), his mother and siblings were here in this vicinity when Manila was being bombed,” she said.
Lim said he wanted to line that stretch of Roxas Boulevard with statues of former Presidents, where monuments to Corazon Aquino, Ramon Magsaysay and Manuel Roxas are already up.
“We know he (Poe) won (in 2004),” Lim said.
Roces added that she was happy to sit between Lim and Estrada during the Mass at Manila North Cemetery.
“They were all smiles,” she said.
“I knew he (Estrada) was coming. We invited him. He’s still a friend. We’re both friends of FPJ,” Lim said.
Lim was talking to Roces when Estrada arrived and the mayor welcomed his former ally and shook his hands.
The two men also shook hands when it was time to say “Peace be with you.”

PNOY CONFERS NATIONAL ARTIST AWARD TO FPJ/ AUGUST 16, 2012
President Benigno S. Aquino III confers the Order of National Artists for Cinema (Posthumous) to the late “King of Philippine movies” Ronald Allan Kelley Poe, popularly known as Fernando Poe, Jr., represented by FPJ’s wife actress Susan Roces, in a ceremony at the Rizal Ceremonial Hall, Malacañang Palace on Thursday (August 16, 2012).
Roces refused to accept the posthumous award during a conferment ceremony at Malacañang in June 2006, during the incumbency of then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Poe ran against Arroyo in the 2004 presidential elections, the results of which were questioned by FPJ before he passed away on December 14, 2004.
"Who doesn't know FPJ or has not watched his films? More than being actor, writer, producer, and director, he is a humble Filipino always ready to help others," the President said.
Aquino said Poe has lived an almost mythical life.
"He is a hero to most Filipinos - a defender of the oppressed and protector of justice," he said.
The citation of the award lauded Poe for his "mythic screen personna" and for bringing to life before the big screen the story of common Filipinos.
According to National Commission on Culture and the Arts head Emily Abrera, Poe is the sixth National Artist awardee for cinema.
Poe, fondly called Da King in the movie industry, now joins the rank of directors Gerardo de Leon, Lamberto Abellana, Ishmael Bernal, Eddie Romero, and Lino Brocka.
"He is different from other directors because he was more known as an actor. In fact, he is perhaps the most famous Filipino action star," Abrera said.
Poe, who was a founder of the Movie Workers Welfare Fund (Mowelfund), produced over 200 films during his lifetime.
He was nominated for the award by Mowelfund head Boots Anson Roa and fellow National Artist Eddie Romero.
Poe's widow, veteran actress Susan Roces, said she was not able to sleep in excitement.
"It is worth waiting for that my husband's award is confirmed by a duly elected President," Roces said
The Order of National Artists (Order ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining) is the highest national recognition given to Filipino individuals who made significant contributions to the development of Philippines arts; namely, Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film and Broadcast Arts, and Architecture and Allied Arts. The order is jointly administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).
Witnessing the ceremony are Poe’s daughter Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) chairperson Mary Grace Poe-Llamanzares, grandson Bryan Poe Llamanzares and NCCA chairman Felipe de Leon, Jr.

AQUINO CONFIRMS NATIONAL ARTIST FOR FPJ
MANILA, Philippines—President Aquino has confirmed an earlier proclamation declaring the late movie actor Fernando Poe Jr. a national artist six years ago.
“Pursuant to the authority vested in me by law, I Benigno S. Aquino III, President of the Philippines, do hereby confirm the declaration of Ronald Allan K. Poe, a.k.a. Fernando Poe Jr. (posthumous) as National Artist as conferred in Proclamation No. 1069, dated May 23, 2006,’’ Mr. Aquino said in Proclamation No. 435 dated July 20.
“It’s a confirmation because the National Artist award has been previously conferred on the late FPJ,’’ Abigail Valte, one of Mr. Aquino’s spokespersons, said at a news briefing.”As we all know, for reasons of their own the family was not able to accept the award previously.’’
Poe, who died of a massive stroke in December 2004, was honored posthumously in 2006 during the term of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. His family did not attend the formal conferment of the award in May 2006.
Poe ran as the opposition presidential candidate but lost to Arroyo by about a million votes. His family had accused Arroyo of stealing the vote from him.
After President Aquino took office in June 2010, Poe’s widow Susan Roces, and daughter Mary Grace Poe-Llamanzares, now head of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board, expressed hope they would receive the award.
