FPJ COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS LAUNCHED

MANILA, Philippines/ November 10, 2010 – Veteran actress Susan Roces, known as the First lady of Philippine cinema, led the launching of the first commemorative stamps honoring her late husband, National Artist for Film Fernando Poe Jr (FPJ), on Wednesday.

"This means a lot to our family," Roces said at the 267th anniversary of the Philippine Postal Office that showcased a philatelic exhibit honoring National Artists Levi Celerio, Leonor Orosa-Goquingco, Carlos Quirino and Nick Joaquin.

Along with her daughter, Movie and Television Review and Classification Board chairman Grace Poe-Llamanzares, Roces proudly showed the stamp images of FPJ in his iconic roles as Panday, Totoy Bato and Pepeng Kaliwete. Also included is his movie “Umpisahan Mo, Tatapusin Ko.”

The FPJ commemorative stamps, selling at P65, is also a big boost to the campaign to promote letter writing in the age of electronic media, cellphone technology and social media.

"Nothing can compare to the personal touch in writing letters, and the smell that goes with love letters," said Roces, who herself continues her family tradition of collecting stamps.

Also featured in the exhibit is a 1961 photo of Roces promoting philately.

She said stamps and letter writing should continue in this Internet-driven age.

Llamanzares, meantime, has encouraged her mother to sign up on Facebook and other social media sites to connect to a new generation of fans. She quickly added that she will not press it.

The Philpost event is a rare outing for Roces, who has largely shunned public events and political occasions and endorsements since FPJ died in December 2004, months after the controversial presidential elections.

FPJ ran in the 2004 presidential polls but lost to former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who is now a representative of the 2nd District of Pampanga.
